Stephen Batchelor
(April 7, 1953, Dunee, Scotland-Alive). Buddhist Scholar. Settled in Dharamsala, India, 1972, and studied under Venerable Geshe Ngawang Dhargyey. Ordained Novice Buddhist Monk, 1974. Moved to Rikon, Switzerland to study under Venerable Geshe Rabten, 1975. Received full ordination as Buddhist Monk, 1978. Translator, Tiberisches Institute, Hamburg, Germany, 1979. Studied Zen in Korean, 1981-1984. Disrobed, February, 1985. Married Martine Fages. Joined Sharpham North Community, Totnes, Devonshire, England, 1985-2000. Co-Founder, Sharpham College for Buddhist Studies and Contemporary Enquiry, 1996. Guiding Teacher, Gaia House, 1990-Current. Moved to Quitaine, France, 2000. Author of Buddhism Without Beliefs and other works.
Martine Batchelor
(1925, France-Alive). Buddhist Scholar. Ordained Buddhist Nun, Korea, 1975. Studied Zen Buddhism under Master Kusan at Songgwang Sa Monastery to 1985. Served as Kusan’s interpretor, 1981-1985. Wife of Stephen Batchelor. Returned to Europe, 1985. Member, Sharpham North Community, Devonshire, England, 1985-1991. Lecturer and Spiritual Counsellor, Gaia House. Co-Editor, Buddhism and Ecology (1992). Author of Principles of Zen and Meditation for Life. Editor, Walking on Lotus Flowers.
